“What’s the Big Idea?”

A theatre workshop with Martha Ross

You have an idea for a piece of theatre but nothing even happens with it. the idea obstinately waits for you, sometimes for years. Or maybe you are desperately seeking a new idea?

Drawing on her training at Ecole Jacques Lecoq and her years at creating theatre, Martha Ross has designed a fun, supportive, challenging day long workshop in which you will play with these ideas or find some new ones.

When: Sunday, November 20 11:00– 6:00 pm

Where: Ottawa Theatre School (294 Picton Avenue, Ottawa, ON)

Cost: $100 (CAEA members and students 20% off)

Class size: 6 – 12 participants

Summer Workshop

Andy Massingham!

Hi everyone! This is Jessica Ruano writing. I am not an official member of the Guerilla Heart Juice! gang, but I did give them a hand in creating this website, and I am an eager participant in the collective’s current workshop. I think I can speak for all the members of the group when I say that we have had a phenomenal time this week with instructors Andy Massingham and Peter Ryan. Sadly, there is only one day left!

Just to spark some curiosity, I thought I would post a few photos of an activity from this evening. The idea was that everyone had a long wooden stick and would place it upright on the floor; immediately it would fall, and its owner would have to rescue it before it hit the ground. As you can see in one of the photos, this can become a circular group activity when one member takes responsibility for another member’s stick, and so on.

It is difficult trying to snap photos while participating in the class, but I will try and capture some more moments in our last class tomorrow evening.

Peter here. For those who may have little or no idea of who we three are here at GHJ, I’m going to begin by outlining my personal Credo, a series of statements that will set the context for the work that I’ll be sharing over the coming months and beyond. This isn’t so much a list of exercises or activities as it is a laying out of the territory within which physical work takes place, at least for me. Perhaps it’s as much to give you a taste of my thinking, if those two images can co-exist for the time being. So without further ado, here it is:

• The body is where we start, is what we are, even before who we are.

• The body is biology – it is also biography.

• The body remembers only in the present moment.

• The body has a relationship to the heart that is more intimate than its relationship to the mind.

• The body has a heart but, more importantly, the heart has a body.

• Head, heart, hara: our personal 3-H club – the right relationship of these three is central.

• The body is concentrated yet not really solid: a solid transparency, a transparent solid.

• The body is both Platonic and Aristotelian – both a concept and an object.

• The body is both our grounding and our enlightenment.

• The body is the result of two energies: imagination and desire.

• I am a body rather than I have a body.

• The body is always actual yet always pure potential.

• The body is an object with which we have a subjective relationship, yet also a subject with which we attempt to have an objective relationship.

• The body is consciousness and awareness, experienced and expressed beyond thought or words.

• The body knows more than we ever consciously know – it knows how to stay alive…

• The body is the constant, the silent partner in our lives.

• The world we have created is the result of our bodies in action, realizing our interiority, our dreams and our desires.

• The body is our home, our world, and our destination.

Having written this, I take full responsibility for my words. Alix, Andy and I may be on the same page, but I do not expect us to be clones of each other. Therefore, these words, these thoughts and ideas, I hold as vital to me. But I hope they spark something in you…
